Access to safe and stable housing—a fundamental human need—is currently being systematically undermined by federal policy shifts. The administration moved to strip housing assistance from over 170,000 formerly homeless individuals, effectively abandoning evidence-based strategies that pair rental aid with critical supportive services.
Further proposals seek to impose harsh time limits and work requirements on rental assistance, while simultaneously suggesting that people who have lost their homes be placed in jails or "long-term institutional settings". At the same time, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is dismantling protections against discrimination by slashing fair housing staff and withholding funds from the nonprofit organizations responsible for investigating civil rights complaints. These combined actions create widespread uncertainty and leave millions of vulnerable families at an increased risk of displacement.
