DOGE-Driven HUD Cuts Will Make It Harder for People to Afford Housing, Exit Homelessness (March 11, 2025 )
March 11, 2025 — The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the Trump Administration are implementing radical changes that threaten national housing stability. By proposing massive staff reductions across key HUD offices, the administration risks stalling the distribution of rental assistance and homelessness grants to millions of vulnerable citizens.
Today only 1 in 4 households in need receives rental assistance due to funding limitations, with long wait lists. These structural cuts are paired with funding freezes and the cancellation of civil rights contracts, which will increase housing discrimination and market uncertainty. Furthermore, new policy shifts, such as imposing work requirements and removing protections for marginalized groups, erect barriers to ending the homelessness crisis. Ultimately, these federal reforms will exacerbate the struggle for affordable living rather than resolving it through proven supportive services.
